I’m Cathy Pace Matthews. I know that it is hard for women to be taken seriously in certain genres of writing, but I haven’t let that stop me. I also chose not to hide behind my initials. Hey, I can’t help it, I was born female and I love horror. I’ll admit, to some my first novel may have been a tiny bit mild but there was a good reason for that. After the first I took the gloves off.
I love the twisted and macabre. I also love the old horror where the thing that went bump in the night scared you and didn't need all the blood gushing from a jagged wound that is more likely to gross you out. There is a difference. Don’t get me wrong, I can do gore and quite well, when I need to.
I also love doing videos and I have to admit, I’m learning as I go. I know that the question most people would ask is, am I a good writer. I’m told by many that I am. Also, you might ask if I write, then why the videos. Stories don’t just come to me I go out and look for them. Something about an old house may set me off, or possibly a large old building. A bridge inspired a short story that turned into a novel. My first book it was a farm and a headstone found on that farm.
The one thing I won’t do when it comes to a novel, is write a horror story without doing the research. I may have to sometimes make up the central location but the history behind that location is going to be real. If I’m going to write about someplace that I want to make the hair stand up on the back of your neck, then I want to know the area I’m writing about can actually do that to me. I have to say the farm isn’t one of those places, but the history that surrounds the place and what might be lying just under a corn field does. I also love the that farm.
I also don’t ghost hunt. There are plenty of people out there who do and that’s not my thing. I tell horror stories, but that doesn’t mean I have to go looking for ghost and monsters. Most often I find places that are just interesting, but when I find that spot that inspires me, then I’ll write a novel. If it’s just an interesting location, I may do a video.
My short stories are a bit different. A person who made me mad can inspire one. One recently did. I’ll say this for the guy who irritated me to no end, I’m still laughing at the story he inspired. Don’t get me wrong, it’s gruesome as hell, but it makes me laugh. Sorry.
You’re sitting alone on a bench one night and you feel the soft touch of a hand on your shoulder. What do you do? Your first response is probably going to be you’re a little startled and you’re going to turn around and look to see who is standing behind you. Unless you were expecting someone to meet you the smart thing to do would be to jump up and run. Most people wouldn’t though and that’s where the story really begins.
I hope that there are those of you who will be willing to take a chance on me. I can’t say I won’t sometimes make you laugh, but let’s face it, while you’re laughing is the best time to scare you. I’m planning on taking a trip to the Smoky Mountains this spring to delve into the background of a book I’m working on. It is for the fourth and what might be the last in the Blood Lines series. Yes, I know that bloodlines is written as one word. There’s a good reason why I didn’t. No, I’m not going to explain it. If you do read the books you might figure it out.
I’m also not a young adult author. I’m way too old for that and personally at this point in my life, I want to read a book that involves men and women over twenty-five and under one hundred and twenty-five. If you’re younger than that I don’t think you’ll care and if you’re older than that, then God bless you and let me know, I’ll change the upper end of the timeline.
I tend to be outspoken and nothing is sacred when it comes to my writing. Well that part isn’t entirely true. The farm in the Blood Lines series is and I don’t apologize for that. I started writing because of that farm.
I strive to create the unusual and different and that’s not always easy, as a matter of fact, it’s hard. I try valiantly not to do the tried and true.
The First Book
I have no idea how the next chapter of my life will unfold but I've learned to just fasten my seat-belt and hold on. I have a full life filled with wonderful people who I love dearly. Whatever happens pray for them. They are going to need it.
