I have bounded over logs and ran through meadows with other children as we went on childish escapes that would have made any parents hair stand on end. As I got older the stories changed and I was introduced to satire, humor, thought provoking images. I didn't get any of these from books but at the feet of one of my older brothers. There has never been another like him and there never will be. He managed to plant a seed in my mind that took far too long for me to nurture.
I have never understood why he didn't take a path that would have, of this I have no doubt, led him down a road of recognition and praise. He really was and still is that good.
Can I fault him for the path he did take? No. He ultimately chose a path that allowed him to serve others at the risk of his own life. From serving in a war that left him an outcast with a lot in this country when he came back to wearing blue and a badge. He has too often stood in harm's way to protect others.
Now he is retired and I would still love to see him pick up his pen and share with the rest of us the magic of his imagination. We would all be richer for it if he did.
Whether or not he ever does I know that my life has been made better for having had him in it. Every girl born should have a brother like him. Don't get my wrong all my brothers added to my life, all four of them, but this one gave me something that allowed me to believe in dragons, magic, and the excitement of what is around the bend up ahead.
